Abstract
The marine industry has its own characteristics and requirements that are different and even more complex than any other industry. With increased concern in environment and the restricted laws adopted made the need for a new marine power plant is essential.
If diesel engine is the 20th century power plant, most scientists believe that FC is the 21 th century power plant due to the great merits it has.
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss this new power plant alternative i.e. ”fuel cell”, which has a lot of characteristics that makes it suitable for marine
environment.
Furthermore, this thesis proposes to decide which type of fuel cell can be used and in which application as well and to find new applications for FC in marine field where an alternative to the current application especially power plant is necessary.
The current situation of FC in marine field is demonstrated and two case studies are discussed where FC merits can be very suitable in these cases. The first case study discus pipe lying barge and the other is a tourist submarine.
