Abstract The aim of the study was to upgrade nurse interns’ knowledge and increase their awareness concerning FGM to be able to counsel clients regarding this issue. This study was carried out in outpatient clinics and Obstetrics and Gynecological wards at Ismailia University hospitals. A total sample of sixty nurse interns working in the thr~ shifts, and 240 women who attended the study settings was studied. Three tools was designed to. collect the necessary d~ta. The ftrst tool was a questionnaire for nurse interns, The second tool was a structured interview form for participating women and the third tool was an observation checklist developed to assess nurse interns’ competency in practicing counseling. The tools were used at the pre, post, and 3-month follow-up phases. The data reve3.ted that Interns’ knowledge before program as regards FGM and counseling was unsatisfactory, while their knowledge in the immediate post-program test and at the 3-month test was mostly satisfactory. Thf: program implemented had a remarkable and significant effect of women. It ac~ly .caused a change in the women’s knowledge and attitudes toward FGM. Based on the foregoing results, recommendations were proposed to eradicate FGM practice. Educational programs and individual or family counseling- about drawbacks of FGM. |
