Abstract
Much interest has been given from different schools of research to the problem of the action of alkalis on 2-or 4-nitrobenzyi compounds since most of the products of these reactions can not be foretold in advance. While 4-nitrobenzyltrimethyi ammonium salts are resistent to the action of hot alkali,a-nitrobenzylpyridinium salts give 4.4-diformylazoxybenzene under thesame conditions.
