Abstract

Polycythemia vera (PV) is a rare blood disease in which the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells. A mutation, or change, in the JAK2 gene is the major cause of PV. It’s more common in adults older than 60, and it’s slightly more common in men. PV may not cause signs or symptoms for years. The most common signs and symptoms of PV are headache, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, , itching, reddened face, a burning feeling on the skin (especially the hands and feet).treatment is by phlebotomy for most patients. Hydroxyurea , Interferon alpha or anagrelide are also used. Erlotinib is used now for treatment of JAK2V617F-positive PV.
To review recent advances in management of polycythemia rubra vera.
