Factors Affecting Scientific Research Productivity of Faculty Members at Assiut University
1-Introduction:
Scientific research is the core function of universities, Today, It is considered as an indicator of social and economical development at any nation .Generally, on the Arab world , the level of researchers productivity with respect to scientific research is very low in terms of number published research and citation .
2 -Study problem:
Despite the vital importance of scientific research to faculty members in particular and for all universities and society in general , many studies revealed a weakness in faculty members productivity at Arabian universities , Therefore , this study is an attempt to identify the most important factors affecting scientific research productivity of faculty members in order to improve it .
3 -Objectives of the study:
This study seeks to:
3.1 measure the level of scientific research productivity of faculty members at Assiut University.
3.2 detect the most important factors affecting scientific research productivity of faculty members and its relative importance at Assiut University , with special emphasis on :
3.2.1 the role of funding scientific research which is represented by offering all the financial aids needed for the completion of scientific research
3.2.2 the role of occupational factors which is represented by the faculty /department scientific research orientation.
3.3.3 the role of publishing and information access.
3.3.4 the role of individual factors as gender/ academic level / type of college.
3.3 suggest recommendations to increase scientific research productivity of faculty members.
4 -Study hypothesis:
4.1 First main hypothesis :
” There is a positive relationship between scientific research productivity (the productivity of research and writing ,conferences and seminars activites , and community development projects) and funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access .”
This hypothesis can be divided into three subhypothesis :
4.1.1 ” There is a positive relationship between the productivity of research and writing ( scientific publishing , books , and supervision and discussion) and funding scientific research, faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access .”
4.1.2 ” There is a positive relationship between productivity of conferences and conferences and seminars activites (the organization of conferences and seminars , scientific participation in confereces and seminars, and attendance of conferences and seminars ) and funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access .”
4.1.3 ” There is a postive relationship between the participation in community development projects and funding scientific research, faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access .”
4/2 Second main hypothesis :
” Scientific research productivity of faculty members differ according to the individual factors of the type of specialization (social sciences, pure&medical sciences), faculty member gender (male, female) academic level (Professor, Assistant Professor , Lecturer).
This hypothesis is divided into nine subhypothesis :
4.2.1 ” Productivity of research and writing (scientific publishing , writing books, supervision and discussion of scientific thesis ) increases in pure & medical sciences than in social sciences.”
4.2.2 ” Productivity of conferences and seminars activites ( the scientific organization , attendance and participation in conferences and seminars ) increases in pure & medical sciences than in social sciences.”
4.2.3 ” Productivity of community development projects increases in pure & medical sciences than in social sciences.”
4.2.4 ” Productivity of research and writing (scientific publishing, writing books , supervision and discussion of scientific thesis ) increases in male members than females.”
4.2.5 ” Productivity of conferences and seminars activites ( the scientific organization , attendance and participation in conferences and seminars ) increases in male members than females.”
4.2.6 ” Productivity of community development projects increases in male members than females.”
4.2.7 ” Productivity of scientific research and writing ( scientific publishing , writing books , supervision and discussion of scientific thesis) increases in professor member than assistant professors , and associate professors are more productive than than lecturer.”
4.2.8 ” Productivity of conferences and seminars activites ( the scientific organization , attendance and participation in conferences and seminars) increases in professor members than assistant professors, and associate professors are more productive than than lecturer.”
4.2.9 ” Productivity of community development projects increases in professor members than assistant professors, and associate professors are more productive than than lecturer.”
5- Researsh Methodology :
5.1 Population and sample :
A sample of 330 has been drawn from a population of 1740 faculty members ,all were surveyed ,and 253 questionnaires were responsed .
5.2 Data collection and analysis:
A survey is designed to collect and examine the hypothesis of the study:
The survey consist of some measures designed to measure the variables used in the study . The statistical analysis in this study included calculations of relaiability tests ( Alpha Kronbach), stepwise regression analysis.
6- Results:
6.1 The results of the first hypothesis :
6.1.1 There is a positive relationship between scientific publishing productivity and the three independent factors ( funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access ) and funding scientific research has pointed out the impact on scientific publishing productivity .
6.1.2 There is no a relation between the productivity of writing books and each of the three independent factors ( funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access ).
6.1.3 There is a postive relationship between supervision and discussion of scientific thesis productivity and each of the three independent factors( funding scientific research, faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access ), and publishing and information access has pointed out the impact on supervision and discussion productivity.
6.1.4 There is no correlation between productivity of organization of conferences and seminars and each of the three independent factors ( funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access ) .
6.1.5 There is a positive relationship between productivity of attending scientific conferences and seminars , and all of the three independent factors ( funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access), and publishing and information access has pointed out the impact on attending scientific conferences and symposia productivity.
6.1.6 There is a positive relationship between productivity of participating on conferences and seminars , and all of the three independent factors ( funding scientific research, faculty /department scientific research orientation , and publishing and information access) , and publishing and information access has pointed out the impact on participating on scientific conferences and seminars productivity.
6.1.7 There is a positive relationship between productivity of participating on community development projects and all of the three independent factors ( funding scientific research , faculty /department scientific research orientation, and publishing and information access ) , and publishing and information access has pointed out the impact on community development projects productivity.
6.2 The results of the second hypothesis :
6.2.1 There is a fundamental differences between productivity of research and writing , conferences and seminars activites , according to the type faculty member specialization ( social sciences, pure & medical sciences)
6.2.2 There is no fundamental differences between productivity of community development projects according to the type of faculty member specialization (social sciences, pure & medical sciences).
6.2.3 There is no fundamental differences between productivity of scientific research with its three aspects ( research and writing , conferences and seminars activites , and community development projects) according to the faculty member gender ( male , female).
6.2.4 There is a fundamental differences between productivity of scientific research with its three aspects ( research and writing , conferences and seminars activites , and community development projects) according to the faculty member academic level .
7- Recommendations:
7.1 Decision makers at the national governoment level:
7.1.1 Encouraging scientific research and given priorities research funding.
7.1.2 Increasing the national income percentage needed for scientific research.
7.1.3 Providing different facilities and taxes reduction for universities.
7.1.4 Coordinate the national and international databases.
7.2 At private institutions and foreign companies level:
7.2.1 Participating in financing scientific research projects.
7.2.2 Establishing a data and information department to facilitate asseccing information about the institution or the project.
7.2.3 Employing faculty members in these institutions as a part time scientific consultants .
7.3 At Assiut University level :
7.3.1 Allocate more funds for scientific research.
7.3.2 Provide the necessary requirements to improve scientific research infrastructure (books, local and global periodicals - the laboratories and factories ...... etc).
7.3.3 Link a national net by the data base in each faculty to serve every researcher in Egypt .
7.3.4. 5 Encourage faculty members to attend conferences and seminars
7.3.5 Encourage faculty members to attend training programs within the framework of FLDP project .
7.4 At faculty member level:
7.4.1 To participate in the policies and guidelines, which take into account research goals.
7.4.2 To acquire skills (modern technology, language, and statistical analysis) and knowledge through attendance of various conferences and seminars,
