The study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of a programme with using imagery and semantic strategies to develop the working memory capacity for prep schools students.
The study sample consisted of (500) students (200 males- 300 females), in the age group (13-14 years). They were students from second grade preparatory school at Qena city who were selected randomly.
The researcher prepared some tools represented in working memory capacity tests that included, listening test, geometrical figures test, missing word test, semantic classification test, manikin test, quantitative test and numerical–verbal test, and prepared a programme with using imagery and semantic strategies. Also the researcher used Ravin’s intelligence Test which was standardized by Ahmed Othman S. Tantawy in a sample of 7500 that represented the Egyptian society. The study tools were standardized on a pilot study in a sample of 201 students who were selected in the same as the study group.The experimental design composed of two groups: control group that contained (33) students (18 males- 15 females) and experimental one that has the same numbers of males and females.
To verify the validity of assumptions, the researcher used a number of statistical methods included: the confirmatory factor analysis and T- Test..
The study has conduct to the following results that: there are statistically significant differences in the mean scores of the experimental group on the pre- and post- test in working memory capacity tests favoring that of the post testing. Also, there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the control group and experimental one who used imagery and semantic strategies on the working memory capacity tests favoring that of experimental group. In addition, the results of the study revealed that there are no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group on the working memory capacity tests in the direct post - testing and the follow-up testing, but there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group on the semantic categorization test and the total one favoring that of follow-up testing, and there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the males and females on some working memory capacity tests representing in geometrical figures test and quantitative test favoring that of males, also there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the males and females on semantic classification, numerical and verbal test but favoring that of females. Concerning the working memory capacity by using imagery strategy there are no statistical significant differences between males and females of all groups, in addition there are no statistical significant differences between males and females of all groups in working memory capacity by using semantic strategy.
The researcher interpreted the results of the study through quantitative and theoretical framework.
