Mass exposures to natural and man-made toxins have been recorded throughout history. Many human exposures have been primarily occupational or industrial in origin, resulting in illness and death.(1)The risks of workplace have been reported by the International Labour Office (ILO). It has been estimated that at least 2 million deaths among workers per year are attributable to occupational diseases and injuries. The ILO estimates for fatalities are the tip of the iceberg because data for estimating nonfatal illness and injury are not available for most of the workers all over the world.(2)
Industrial toxins can harm exposed workers through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion. The quantity of the agent as well as its route of elimination all affect the clinical manifestations resulting from substance toxicity. It is important to elicit any recent changes in suppliers of these substances to which the worker is exposed, as even a slight change in the formulation of a chemical may cause adverse effects in an individual who previously had no problems working with that compound .
