Fracture of ceramo-metal restorations is considered as a problem for both the dentist and the patient. Many different bonding systems are currently available to repair ceramo-metal restorations intra-orally if they are clinically accepted.
This study was carried out with the purpose of testing shear bond strengths of composite to porcelain and nickel-chromium alloy using three different bonding agents (Excite, AdheSE, Prompt L-Pop) with four different surface treatments (sandblasting and etchant, diamond stone roughening, sandblasting and HF etching, no surface treatment).
A total of 120 samples, half of the samples were made of porcelain and the other half was made of nickel-chromium alloy. Each half was divided into three equal main groups each of 20 samples, according to bonding agent used. Each main group was subdivided into four subgroups five samples each, according to the surface treatment procedure done. After application and curing of bonding agents, a split cylindrical teflon mold (3 mm height and 4 mm diameter) was used to build up the composite part. A microhybride light-cured composite (Tetric Ceram) was applied according to the manufacturer instructions. Immediately after curing of composite resin, the mold was removed; the specimens were stored in 37 °C distilled water for 24 hours before thermal cycling, which occurred between 5 °C and 55 °C for 1000 cycles with a 10-second dwell time. After thermal cycling, specimens were stored in 37 °C distilled water for an additional day. The shear bond strength of each bonded sample was tested using universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min. The debonded samples were examined using light microscope and selected samples were chosen for electron microscope scanning. All results were tabulated and statistically analyzed.
