Abstract BACKGROUND: Carotid atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction are early functional and structural markers of systemic atherosclerosis can be assessed non-invasively by high resolution duplex. METHOD: 30 patients presenting with stroke (mean age 55.5±6.7), 30 patients with on or more atherosclerotic risk factors (mean age 57.9±6.4) and 30 volunteers with no cardiovascular disease or risk factors (mean age of 57.7±6.7). RESULTS: CCA IMT, CCA RI and ICA RI increased while FMD% and significantly decreased in patient groups compared to control. CONCLUSION: Carotid IMT and brachial artery FMD% are independent risk factors for stroke and they are affected more with increasing number of risk factors. |
