Abstract

SUMMARY
• The stomach of rabbits is of the monolocular variety. It is divided into three regions; cardiac, fundic and pyloric regions.
• The gastric wall is composed of four layers; namely, tunica mucosa, tela
submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa.
t-Cardiac region:
a- Tunica mucosa:
The transition between the oesophageal and the cardiac regions is peculiarly abrupt.
The mucous tunic averages 228.49+0.52 and 1506.80±0.88 microns at the cardio-oesophageal junction in zero day-old and 120 day-old rabbits; respectively. However, it reaches 113.6±0.34 and 538.68+2.51 microns throughout the cardiac region in zero day-old and 120 day-old rabbits.
1- Lamina epithelialis:
• The lamina epithelialis fluctuates between 11.16±0.13 and 28.44±0.77 microns in height in different age groups studied. It is of the simple columnar variety which demonostrates Alcian blue-positive reaction both intracellularly and/or extracellularly.
2- Lamina propria:
The fibrillar elements of the lamina propria are of the collagenous, elastic and reticular types. These elements react positively to Alcian blue stain.
This layer demonstrates high vascularity especially in 30, 60 and 120 day- old specimens.
The cardiac glands are of the simple tubular and/or simple tubular branched variety. During the pre-weaning stage (0 day-, 1 day-, 7 day- and 15 day-old rabbits) the glandular cells are mostly undifferentiated except for few parietal cells which demonstrate themselves sporadically at the body and base of the glandular end-pieces. These parietal cells increase enormously in amount ab 30 day-old stage and throughout of the post-weaning period.
