Abstract

Plain film radiography was once the study ordered most commonly to evaluate sinonasal cavity, computed tomography has now replaced plain radiography The superiority of CT over other methods of imaging of the sinuses can be summarized as follows The bony walls of the sinuses are demonstrated well by CT in a high resolution mode An excellent anatomic display of soft tissue densities, including fluid levels and polypoid masses within the sinuses, nasal cavity and post nasal space Disease extending beyond the bony limits of the sinuses into the adjacent soft tissue of orbit, brain and infratemporal fossa can be imaged Coronal CT scanning has dramatically improved the imaging of paranasal sinus anatomy .Subtle bony anatomic variations of this region are being detected with high level of clarity .These variations have been implicated in the etiology of chronic and recurrent sinusitis or can contribute in some way to the development of recurrent sinusitis CT is considered the definitive imaging method in the diagnosis of maxillofacial trauma; it provides a mean of simultaneous evaluation of both osseous and soft tissue components of the face. It is accurate in the depiction and localization of fracture line bony fragmentation and the assessment of the degree of displacement of facial fractures It is also accurate in detection and classification of Le Fort type of fracture. A major advantage of CT over other imaging methods is its ability to directly demonstrate the soft tissue changes associated with osseous injury for example herniation of the orbital contents into the maxillary sinus through an orbital floor fracture.
