Abstract

This study attempts to cast light upon the phenomenon of witchcraft or devil-worshipping and how it can be the fundamental means for some people through which they can attain certain objectives. The study, on the other hand, indicates the serious ramifications of witchcraft’s belief as portrayed through three literary works of drama; namely Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus (1588), William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1603-1607), and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (1953). The study is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction reveals the main points discussed throughout the thesis.
The first chapter begins with a historical background about witchcraft in Europe during the Middle Ages, and specifically the fifteenth century. Then it handles the problem of adopting witchcraft and magic in Christopher Marlowe’s dramatic work Doctor Faustus, and its negative influences upon the protagonist of the play.
The second chapter highlights a historical background about witchcraft in England during the Elizabethan Age. Then it tackles the dramatic work of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and how the problem of embracing witchcraft can be manifested through his character.
The third chapter gives a historical background about the events of witchcraft in America during the seventeenth century, and throws light also on another political historical event which takes place in America during the twentieth century and which, at the same time, coincides with that of the seventeenth century in America. The chapter then deals with the case of witchcraft as depicted in the dramatic work of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
The conclusion illuminates the results that the researcher finds. It examines, on the other hand, the similarities and differences between the three dramatic works and their protagonists. A list of works cited is then appended at the end of the thesis.
