Abstract

High accuracy is the most important issue in surveying applications of Global Positioning System (GPS). Because of a variety of factors, all GPS collected points have a cer4Un amount of error. This means that the location on the screen of a receiver will not reflect the real location.
The geometry of tracked GPS satellites is an important factor to the quality of positioning results and it can be assessed through the Qilution Qf~recision (DOP) factor.
GPS receivers usually report the quality of satellite geometry in terms of fosition Dilution of Precision, or PDOP. PDOP combines the effects of Horizontal (HDOP) and Yertical (VDOP) Dilution Of Precision (for latitude, longitude and altitude). Another term is TDOP, or .Time Dilution of Precision. TDOP refers to satellite clock offset. And Qeometric (GDOP) is a measure for all three spatial coordinates (PDOP) and the receiver clock bias (TDOP).
This study presents investigations performed to study the effect of satellite geometry on precise GPS positioning. The thesis contains the following studies:
Effect of the Dilution Of Precision (DOP) factors (pDOP, GDOP, HDOP, VDOP, TDOP) on the accuracy of point
