Abstract This thesis consists of six chapters: Chapter 1: It includes a preface on the concepts of chemical kinetics with literature survey on carrageenans and their properties and economic applications in addition to the permanganate ion as an oxidizing agent and its properties and the mechanistics of oxidation of organic substrates in aqueous media. Special attention was also paid to the oxidation-reduction reactions as well as to the reaction mechanism. Chapter 2: It includes the experimental details in this thesis such as preparation of carrageenans solutions, determination of physical properties, preparation and standardization of potassium permanganate, description of the techniques and apparatus used. It also includes preparation of other reagent solutions. Again, in this part, synthesis and analyses of diketo-acid derivatives of carrageenans were also presented. |
