This research work tackles the question of ”the relations of rhythm to structure and construction and their influence on semantics.” Here I mean rhythm in its comprehensive meaning, i.e., all that produces musical sound such as the single sounds, both long and short vowels, the quantity of consonants and vowels, the morphological forms at the level of analogy and usage, the simple and complex grammatical structures resulting from the words falling with one another in the context of the poetic text at the level of analogy and usage, the poetic meters and all variations that meters undergo due to the two phenomena of inflection and elision, the difference between the poetic meter in its abstract form and in the poetic context, the rhyme at the level of regular poetry and free poetry, and the phenomena of accentuation and whether the Arabic poetry is quantitative or accentual or it is quantitative that is apt to be accentual. It also handles the relation of rhythm to the morphological construction of a single word and the grammatical structure and the influence of these factors on semantics. Semantic here refers to the meaning a word acquires from existing in the same context with other elements besides its lexical meaning, and whether the relation between rhythm on one side and structure and construction on the other side is a relation of influence only, a relation of being influenced only, or a relation of both influence and being influenced.
Moreover, the research work deals with the divan ”Qira’ah fi `Aynaiy Habibatiy” by the poet Prof. Sha`ban Salah as a model of application because this divan is characterized by the affluence of phenomena that deserve research. Besides, this divan contains regular poems and prose poems, a matter that provides the research with a wider field of application.
The research aims at:
1- Displaying the constituent elements of the rhythmic chain
2- Displaying the relations of rhythm to the morphological structure and their influence on semantics
3- Displaying the relations of rhythm to the grammatical structures and their influence on semantics
4- Testing the applicability of modern analysis methods on the linguistic usages by Sha`ban Salah
5- Testing the grammatical rules mentioned the books of grammar, inflection of words and linguistic necessities and how Sha`ban Salah succeeded in bringing rhythmic purposes and the Arabic grammatical rules into harmony
6- Displaying the stylistic characteristics by which the poet is characterized
In his analysis of the divan, the researcher depends on the descriptive method that observes all morphological, constructional, semantic and rhythmic phenomena in the divan. Then, the researcher classifies the observed phenomena and gives explanation and analysis of the phenomena he has already observed.
This demands that the researcher depend on the following tools:
1- The Holy Qur’an which as the top constitution of fluency
2- Great heritage books represented in the books on grammar, inflection of words and linguistic necessities
3- Modern linguistic books
4- Some old and modern divans as well as some explanations and analyses of some divans
The research consists of:
A- An introduction to the theme of the research and the divan as a model of application
B- A preface which includes the following:
1- The reasons for choosing the theme
2- The purposes of the research and the study
3- The previous studies from which the researcher has benefited
4- The method and the tools on which the researcher depended
5- The material of the study in terms of quantity and quality
6- The standards of study and analysis
7- The dimensions of the study
The research is classified into four chapters as follows:
Chapter One: Rhythm and its elements
This chapter tackles the elements of rhythm such as single sounds, vowels and consonants, morphological construction, grammatical structures, poetic meters, rhyme of both regular and prose poetry, poetry in terms of quantification and accentuation, and the relation between these elements.
Chapter Two: Rhythm and structure
This chapter tackles the structure of names and nouns at the levels of analogy and usage. It also deals with the relation between rhythm and structure and its influence on semantics.
Chapter Three: The relations of rhythm to construction and their influence on semantics
This chapter handles both simple and complex grammatical constructions as well as the relation between rhythm and construction and its influence on semantics.
Chapter Four: The relation of components of the poet’s character to rhythm
)poet’s character such as the scientific and social environments, early life, handicap and its influence in changing the poet’s orientation, the different educational stages and the relation of all these components to rhythm.
8- Conclusion
The conclusion displays the most important results the study has reached; for example:
- Changing the symbols used by the ancient people for expressing vowels and consonants is regarded as a wrong practice.
- The Arabic poetry is quantitative in the first place, but it is apt to be accentual.
- The relation of rhythm to structure and construction is a relation of influence and being influenced.
- There is no fixed meaning of a word, as the context renews the meaning of a word.
