Abstract

Pandemic flu virus has its origins in AF virus, The pathogenic AF subtype H5N1 is already panzootic in poultry, it continues to cross species barriers to infect humans, often with fatal outcomes, therefore H5N1 virus has rightly received attention as a potential pandemic threat Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the community awareness opinion, and practice related to AF. Setting: Rural area (Bahetim) within Qalubiya Governorate. Method: The data were collected from 399 rural respondents,
randomly selected in Bahetim. For data collection, two tools were used. The first is an interviewing questionnaire, which consists of four parts and includes socio-demographic data, assessment of knowledge on AF in birds and human, opinion on AF, and assessment of practices on AF. The second tool concerned with an observational checklist for home environment. The study reflected
the knowledge, opinion and practices on AF. Findings: The general awareness and opinion about AF are high among the
interviewed respondents while their practices toward self protection did not reach an ideal one. Recommendations: The study suggests that education and communication focusing on effective preventive measures against AF including safe practices will risk reduction and limiting spread of AF through mass media
especially television which has a very important role as a source of information to all population.
