Abstract

This study was conducted on a group of 100 health care workers (53 nurse and 47 doctors),working at different university hospitals and hospitals of ministry of health, who completed a full series of hepatitis B vaccine at 0,1,6 months to assess their immune response to HBV vaccine by measuring HBsAb titer for them. Subjects with HBsAb titer more than 10 IU/ml considered immune against hepatitis B infection and those with level less than 10 IU/ml considered non immune to hepatitis B virus. This study revealed that responders were 96 with mean age 25 ± 6.6 years, mean BMI 26.4 ±2.2, mean duration 3±1.9 years and mean HBsAb titer 821.3±280.5 IU/ml. While non
responders were 4 samples with mean age 30±2.4 years, mean BMI 27.5±4.6, mean duration 4.7±1.5 years and mean HBsAb titer 0.5±1 IU/ml. Age, duration from last dose of vaccine were taken as factors affecting immune response to HBV vaccine, so the study concluded that hepatitis B vaccine is safe, effective and should be given early to get better response.
