Abstract

The present study was conducted on a number of 32 animals (28 donkeys, 2 mu 1 e s and 2 faa is) Chloral hydrate 10% solution was administered intravenously in different doses (6, 9, 12 and 15 g/ 50 kg B.Wt.). The clinical effects of the drug were recorded. The macro and microscopic changes in the liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenals, heart and brain were studied. Different surgical operations were performed under the effect of chloral hydrate an aesthesia to assess its efficacy. Chloral hydrate could be used in dose rate of 6, 9, and 12 g/ 50 kg 3.Wt. The use of the drug in a dose rate of 6 g/ 50 kg B.Wt. enabled to control the animals in the recumbent pothitton, but most of the reflexes were not affected in most animals. Chloral hydrate in a dose rate of 9 and 12 g I 50 kg E.Wt. gave an a e at best a for a period of 60 to 90 In minutes , but after the 1 dose the animals laid down for long period (3 to 4 hours). Chloral hydrate in a dose rate of 15 g /50 kg B.Wt. is lethal. The most prominent clinical effect for chloral hydrate especially the large doses is on body temperature which decreased to lower than 35 degree centigrade within 2 to 3 hours after the drug injection.
