المستخلص ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF BANANA IN QALUBIA GOVERNORATE SUMMARY Banana is considered one 01 the main fru~t crops in Arab Republic at Egypt. The cultivated area of banana in Egypt was about 20 thousand teddans in 1984. Production of banana of the Same year waS 184 thousand tons. The important gov~rnorates in production 01 banana are Qena· and Qa1ubia. The production of these two governorates in 1984 waS about 44, 882 and 3D, 121 thousand tons respeotive1y. Qa1ub1a represented about 13.3% 01 the total banana crop area in Egypt and produced about 16.4% of the total country production. The main problem of banana in QQ.lubia governorate is the low production rate although the enVironmental ,and sail conditions are suitable for· a higher production rate. Effeciency at banana marketing is very low compared.lth other crops. the purpose of this research was to study the reasons of low banana ’productivity and marketing etfeeieney in Qalubia gov~rnorate. J 2 Simple correlation, and multiple regression were used to estimate production function. This study included four chapters. First and second chapters dealt with banana production of Egypt and Qalubia governorate. Third chapter dealt with economics of banana production in Qalubia governorate, estimation of banana production function, and costs of banana production. The fourth chapter dealt with marketing of banana. This chapter was.divided to two section. The first section included marketing of ban&na in Rod~EI Farag wholesale. market of fruita and vegeta~les. The aecond section dealt with marketi~g of banana in Qalubia governorate. The study report ended by the summary and conc~usions. Following is a summary of the study findings. i,1 I! ’ The study alhowed that, the cuIt1yated area, total production, and thej average prodcctlon per teddan increased ) annually by 1.5%, 2.14% and 0.63% respectively during the period 1969 - 1984. The study indicated that there were differences between the real farm price, the total cultivated area and -pr o duc t Lve area of banana in Qalubia gove~norate during the period 1969-1981. The average production of banana for sample farms in 1985 was 8.1 ton per feddan. The average costs per fedden at banana for the tour classes of the sample farms were 2265.•8, 2291.2, 2439 and 2332.9 Egyptian pounds respectively. The average ~arm profits per fedden of banana were 2543.1, )180.1, 3352 and )642.5 Egyptian pound for the four chaBses respectively. The study indicated that the net profit on investment in 1985 were 1.20, 1.23, 1.46 and 1.60 Egyptian pound for four sizes’.respectively •. Findings also 1n¢1cated a negatiT8 relationship between farm area and average costs per tedden. The ,study showed that farm size of 5 ted4a11s or IDOre was most effecient compareti’w1”’t1stmaller ta:rm sizes. This study showed~hat marketing ot banaJla in Qalub1a :~~, .-;: 4 occurs in two stages, production regions and wholesale markets. During the two stages, various marketing functions are performed. The relative marketing margin of banana was 44.2% of the retail price. The share of the producer in the retail price amounted to 55.8%. Marketing efficiency of banana waS 56%. Which is co~sidered medium. This study showed seasonal flactuations in prices and quantities of banana in Rod-El Farag market. Rod-El Farag market is considered the wholesale market of banana in Egypt. This market received about l~.t% of the tot al Egy ptian production of banana in 198 S. This study showed that banana came to the market from the beginlng of December to the end of May. In October to the end of March, prices of banana reached their monthly maxi- • mum. In July and August quanti ties and prices of bananaa marketed in Rod-El Farag market was at minimum during the period 1971 - 1985. There were 46 banana wholesalers in Rod-El Farag market. Market structure, conduct t and performance of banana in the market of Rod-El Far.ag were also included. |
