alcohole as benzsl alcohol and aldehsdes and ketones (as vanillin).
Chemical c~mpcsition ~as achieved by G.L.C. method where
eugenol, acetjl eugenol, cerryophyllen and myrcen ~ere identified.
Results obtained c ou.Ld be eummar-Laed as f’o L’l.owa :-
I - Steam distillation yielded the tighest percentage of clove
.oil ( especially from crushed cloves).
2 - No obvious cifferences were shown in specific gravity and
refractive indeJl for whole and crushed clove oils in respect
to isolation methods.
However oil extracted with dhlcrophorm had the highest·
values of sp. travit2 •
J - The isolation methods affected the optical rotation and
solubility in alcohol of clove eils ( whole and crushed clove
oil) •.
The ~ater cistilled oil was found to ba~e the highest
values of optic~l rotation and solubility in alcohol.

4 _ Values of acid No., ester No. aldehyoes ana ketones and total
~lcohols of whole ~nd crushed clove oils were influenced by
the methods 8f isolation i.e. extracted clove oil ~ad the
lo~est values of a~id No. and aloehydes and ketones cor.tents,
~hile it ~5S the highest values of ester No. and total alcohols.
5 - The stearr.aistilled oil mostls showed an increase in eugenol
conten t ,

recorded in case of steam distilled oil.
7 _ Crushing treatment affected the ~hysical properties of water
distilled clove oil and steam distilled one by lo~ering the

alcohol.while the optical rotation of clove oil wes .
increased in comparison ~ith non crushing treatment
( whole cloves ).
