Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science in which programs are
created to apply multi-dimensional, intelligent solutions to complex problems.
AI is applied in several fields of science and in almost all medical specialties
including Audiology. The aim of this essay is to highlight the role of AI in a
variety of hearing products addressing the problem of speech recognition in the
presence of background noise in the hard of hearing population. AI has been
implemented in hearing aids and cochlear implants. AI, through parallel
processing processes all of the possible processing and arrives at the optimum
solution. Adaptive dynamic range optimization (ADRO) has shown to improve
audibility, comfort and intelligibility of sounds. AI provides significant benefit
in terms of speech to noise ratio.
