Abstract

Arthroscopic management of recurrent shoulder instability offers many advantages over the open techniques. First, it reveals precisely the primary pathological lesion responsible for recurrent dislocation, which is the Bankart lesion in over than 90% of the patients, also it reveals presence of capsular laxity, and other lesions associated with the recurrent instability e.g. Hill- Sachs lesion, lesions of anterior glenoid rim, and loose bodies. Second, arthroscopic procedures limit the dissection of muscles, reducing postoperative scarring and so minimizing postoperative weakness and loss of range of motion. Third, with less dissection, postoperative pain and bleeding decrease so arthroscopic procedure can be done in an outpatient setting, eliminating the costly hospitalization required for the open procedures.
