Abstract

SUMMARY
Hydatidosis is one of the most important endemic zoonotic parasitic diseases with a wide spread distribution in the Middle East. It is also a major economic problem in sheep and camels raising countries and represents a serious threat to human health in many parts of the world.
In the present study, a survey was made for hydatidosis among slaughtered animals in Assiut and Bani-Adi abattoirs. The prevalence rates were 10 (8%) out of 125 camels, 4 (0.4%) out of 1032 sheep, 4 (0.4%) out of 1158 cattle and 1(0.1%) out of 1057 buffaloes. The lungs were more involved organ than liver in camels. In the infected sheep the livers were more involved than lungs. In the infected cattle the hydatid cysts were present in liver, spleen and heart, while in the infected buffalo a single cyst was found only in the lung. The fertile hydatid cyst rate was high in camels (80%) and in sheep (25%), while in cattle and buffaloes, there was no fertile hydatid cysts.
Concerning Echinococcosis in dogs, in the present study 60 stray dogs were examined, 10 of them from around Bani-Adi abattoir and no Echinococcus granulosus tapeworms were found with a zero prevalence.
Concerning hydatidosis in human beings, for the serodiagnosis of hydatidosis the respective tests were indirect haemagglutination test (IHA) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results of the examined individuals in this study can be summarized as follows:
1. Out of 92 serum samples from patients admitted to Assiut University Hospital examined for detection hydatidosis antibodies, 6 cases proved to be positive with a prevalence of 6.5% by the indirect haemagglutination test.
2. The ELISA technique applied to the same serum samples of the patients indicated a prevalence rate of hydatidosis amounting to 4.3%.
3. The sero-prevalence rate of hydatidosis as related to sex, figured up to 5.1% (in males) and 7.5% (in females) by using the IHA test while the respective figures of the ELISA amounted to 5.1% and 3.8%.
4. The sero-prevalence rate of hydatidosis according to age by using the IHA test, amounted to 0% (< 20 years), 0% (20 < 30 years), 16.7% (30 to < 40 years), 4% (40 to < 50 years) and 8.5% (50 years and more), while the respective figures of the ELISA amounted to 0%, 11.1%, 16.7%, 4% and 2.13%.
5. According to the residence of the examined individuals, hydatidosis sero-prevalence rates amounted to 6.7% in (rural areas) and 5.9% in (urban areas) by using IHA test and amounted to 4% in (rural areas) and 5.9% in (urban areas) by using ELISA test.
6. The sero-prevalence rate of hydatidosis according to the possibility of dog contact by using the IHA test, amounted to 7.7% (direct contact) and 5.7% (no contact) while the respective figures of the ELISA test amounted to 5.1% and 3.8%.
- These findings have considerable epidemiological and public health significance which were discussed.
- Recommendations for the prevention and control of hydatidosis were given.
