Abstract

Maps can be considered the most essential tool for delivering spatial and descriptive information for any region. To retrieve data from these maps, the corresponding information should be presented in a proper manner, regarding the drawn scale and the cartographic rules. In other words, the available information in each map has to be matched with its own scale. Moving from one scale to another, this matched information should be preserved with no elimination of any interested contents. This requirement is performed by what is so called “generalization”. The higher the efficiency of the generalization the more the required information is available in the generalized maps.
In this context, generalization reduces the complexity and volume of data that are presented in any map, and emphasizes only the required geometric and labels in any map related to its scale. With the development of computer vision and digital map production, many researchers are still investigating the possibility to automate the generalization process completely, and hence increase its efficiency. This demand is going under certain challenges and represents the basic motivation behind the current study.
To achieve the main goal of the thesis, a generalization is carried out to map of particular study area with different scales, with the aid of the geographic information system (GIS) concept. Accordingly, the developed logical steps of the generalization is written and handled through the ArcGIS, which is the most commonly used GIS software, concerning the ability of dealing with all map features separately, and merging the generalized layers with a specified criteria using a structure query language (SQL).
