Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a global health problem affecting 3% of the world’s population (about 180 million) and a cause of both hepatic and extrahepatic diseases.
B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders represent the most closely related as well as the most investigated HCV-related extrahepatic disorder.
The association between extrahepatic as well as hepatic malignancies has justified the inclusion of HCV among human cancer viruses (Zignego et al., 2007).
On the basis of the previous observation, this hospital based retrospective case–control study was conducted to assess HCV as a risk factor for lymphoproliferative disorders and the study was extended to involve the other possible environmental risk factors for lymphoproliferative disorders.
One hundred and thirty adult patients with lymphoproliferative disorders (Non–Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Leukemia)were recruited from the Oncology department, Menoufiya University Hospital, Egypt.
A similar number of controls were selected from the Orthopedics department, Menoufiya University Hospital, Egypt, coming in accidents, and matched with patients for age, sex, and residence in the period from 1st of April 2007 through 31th of October 2008.
Subjects were interviewed about their history of exposure to possible risk factors (e.g. pesticides, household insecticides, smoking,X-rays, malaria infection, hair dyes, the most frequently used two food staffs/week, operations, blood transfusion, and dental treatment) and blood samples were collected for serological tests of liver functions and for anti-HCV by ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbant Assay).
