Abstract

No work is completely risk -free, and all health care professionals should have some basic knowledge about workforce populations, and occupational hazards and methods to control hazards and improve health. The aim of the present study was to identify the occupational factors affecting worker’s health in company for engineering industries, in Cairo City. Subjects included 300 workers representing all workers working in the civilian production sectors. Tools for data collection included five tools: (1) Interviewing questionnaire format for assessment of socio-demographic characteristics, life style and general working conditions of the studied sample (2) Interviewing format for assessment of workers knowledge and perception including knowledge regarding selected first aid measures and interventions, (3) Physical assessment and measures sheet. (4) Checklist for an assessment of worker’s exposure to work related hazards and stress. (5) An observational checklist and records analyses for work-site accepted level of physical environment safety, sanitation and workers uses of self-protective devices. Results of this study showed that more than half of the studied sample (51.7%), they age were over 45, more than half (52.7%) did not received any training courses, more than half of workers (52%) had high BMI more than 27, more than one-quarter of workers (31%) had Musculo-skeletal problems, two-thirds (69%) of workers suffered from low back-pain, and near half (44%) of the studied workers are suffering from job stressors. Two-thirds of the workers under study (70%) exposed to high level of noise, more than half (52%) exposed to dust and vapor, near half of the workers (47%) exposed to high temperature, more than two fifth (43%) exposed to oil and fatty elements, more than four-fifths of them (82%, 95% and 94%) were not using foot, ear or respiratory protections. The physical work environment in the studied industry was not accepted, the safety and sanitation wear not accepted. There was a highly significant statistical relation between presence of health problems, and exposure to environmental hazards among workers under study, which projected the needs for an occupation health program, for the health promotion of all workers for improving work site environment and educational program for nurses in the studied industry to emphasize ideal occupational health nursing role.
