Abstract

The rapid increased numbers of running vehicles on the roads in Egypt strictly imposes the presence of “Road Traffic Noise Prediction Model” (RTNPM), compatible with the national conditions of roads and vehicles.
The main parameter for RTNPM is the determination of the sound power levels of running vehicles on the Egyptian roads.
This model is based mainly on ISO standards for propagation of noise outdoors under certain assumptions.
The study classifies vehicles into two groups, light vehicles and heavy ones, and then the average noise power levels of each group had been determined from measurements of 54 different categories of the running vehicles. The average sound power levels of these vehicles have been determined by the relationship between sound power levels and maximum sound pressure levels which had been measured previously.
The calculated sound power levels had been used for prediction model. The Formed model has been adjusted and calibrated with 83 actual measurement locations in 3 highways and 40 major main roads for the proposed obtaining correction factor and then the final
model has been tested and verified at 86measurement locations at the same highways and main roads.
The model considered acceptable within ±3dB, and then, it can be considered applicable for flat Road Traffic Noise Prediction (RTNP) in the absence of obstacles and reflectors between the road and the receiver up to 40 meters from roadside. This model should be fed with input data involves: temperature, humidity, traffic volume and average speed of each group category of vehicles. The output will express the sound pressure level at both sides of the road.
