Abstract

The aime of study is To identify the prevalence of UTI in febrile infants and children and relation of urine analysis, urine culture and renal sonography as diagnostic evaluation of UTI.
This work was conducted in pediatric department, Zagazig University, aiming at identification of prevalence of UTI in febrile infants and children and evaluation of the role of urine analysis, urine culture and renal sonography in diagnosis of UTI in these patients. The study included 200 cases with fever (~ 38.3°C rectal or > 37.5°C oral) for less than 48 hours, excluding those with clinically detectable cause of fever. All cases were subjected to full medical history, complete
general examination and local examination of the urinary system.
Urine examination included urine analysis and urine culture, urine
samples were obtained by SPA (in neonates), urine bag (in non toillet
trained children) or midstream void (in toillet trained children). Urine
analysis was performed and urine culture included aerobic, anaerobic
and fungal media. All cases were evaluated sonographically using B-
mode renal sonography for anatomic abnormalities (congenital
anomalies) and other abnormalities (suggestive of infection).
