Abstract

Dioxins and furan are environmental pollutants. They are group of dangerous chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants. Dioxins are of concern because of their highly toxic potential.
This study aimed to investigate the environmental and biological impacts associated with exposure to dioxin and furan at work places.
The study included 40 volunteers, 20 of them working at natural gas processing plants, and the other 20 are working at fuel oil operating plants that exposed directly to dioxins and furan at their work places. The first group is considered as control group for comparison.
The measured parameters are divided into two main parts, the first one concerned with evaluation of potential release of PCDD/ PCDF at three natural gas & fuel oil operating plants using Standardized Toolkit for Identification and Quantification of Dioxins and Furan Releases ( prepared by UNEP ) , and the second part concerned with evaluating the effect of exposure to such pollutants on some parameters concerning liver and kidney functions
Our results in this study showed that the natural gas compartments under consideration which use natural gas as a source of fuel do not generate large amounts of PCDD/PCDF compared to fuel oil compartments that used fuel oil as a source of fuel.
Examination of the blood of workers at fuel oil plants showed statistically significant decrease in total proteins and albumin, while an increase in the serum levels of ALT, AST, bilirubin, urea and creatinine as compared to controls.
