Abstract
With the development of effective treatment strategies, the focus of TB management has shifted from the prevention of mortality to avoidance of morbidity. As such, there is increased interest in the quality of life ( QOL ) experienced by individuals being treated for TB. This study was aiming to assess the quality of life changes among patients with tuberculosis. This study was based on answering the following questions; what are the changes that might occur in QOL after infection with TB? Is there is a difference of QOL between newly diagnosed and chronic male and female and low socioeconomic and high socioeconomic patients, with tuberculosis? This aim was achieved through assessing the QOL domains using QOL scale. The study was conducted at Chest unit and Outpatient Clinic at Al Kaser El Aini and Omrania Hospital, started in January 2006 and was completed by June 2006. The selected sample included 100 patients with pulmonary TB based on selected criteria. The study revealed that there were a statistically positive significant correlation between scores of all QOL domains and patient income. Perception is a first positive strong independent predictor and duration of illness is a second positive independent predictor of QOL. There were statistically positive significant correlations between knowledge and sociodemographic characteristics of the study group. The study recommended the development of educational program for patients with TB to improve the patients’ knowledge, care management and modify their wrong beliefs related to TB. Patients’ QOL should be the main objective for nurses during nursing care of patients with TB.
