Abstract

This study was carried out at Animal Production Department Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of thyroxine (Eltroxin) and live yeast culture (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae) on some productive and physiological traits in Ossimi sheep.
Forty Ossimi ewes were assigned randomly to four groups of 10 animals each. Ewes of the 1st group were given a basal diet only and considered as the control group, whereas the 2nd group were given a basal diet plus supplemented orally dosed with 200 µg/head/day of thyroxine (Eltroxin). The 3rd group was given a basal diet plus drenched with 5g/head/day of live yeast, whereas the 4th group was given a basal diet plus supplemented with thyroxine 200 µg/h/day and live yeast culture 5g/head/day.The results obtained from the analysis of the data can be summarized as follows:
Treated groups with thyroxine alone or treated with thyroxine plus live yeast had a significant effect on litter weight at birth and weaning, birth weight of lambs born from supplemented dams with thyroxine alone or with thyroxine plus live yeast was significantly heavier, daily gain of lambs born from treated dams from birth to weaning age showed higher values (P<0.05) than those of control group . Sex of lambs had a significant (P<0.01 or P<0.05) effect on daily gain during all periods studied. Male lambs grew faster than female at all ages studied.
Thyroxine and live yeast culture supplemented to the ewes had a significant effect on total milk yield, lactation length and average daily milk yield.
Results showed that daily milk yield reached the peak in 4th week of lactation in all groups studied and then declined gradually until the end of milking
Ewes treated with thyroxine alone (Th group) and with thyroxine plus live yeast (Th+Yc group) had significantly (P<0.05) higher levels of milk fat , protein , total solids , ash and milk energy than either control group or ewes treated with live yeast alone (Yc group) . Ewes treated with thyroxine alone or with thyroxine plus live yeast group) had higher levels of grease fleece weight and staple length, all treated groups (Th) , (Yc) and (Th+Yc) showed an increase in serum concentrations of T4 and T3. The TDN% value was improved by 7% as the live yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae ) supplemented by 5g/head/day (Yc group) , while supplemented with thyroxine (200 µg/head/day) plus live yeast (Th+Yc group) improved the TDN% by 9.1% than the control group . Also, the DCP % improved by 11.25%, 7.05% in the Th+Yc group and Yc group than the control group.
