Abstract

Intermaxillary fixation is considered to be the traditional method of treating fractures of the human jaw. It is the treatment of choice for complex fractures of the middle part of the face as well as for several forms of condylar fiactures of the mandible and for mandibular fractures in children. IMh’ can promote severe complication such as airway occlusion, may artificially narrow the airway and impair respiratory function, in addition patients complain of difficulty in nutrition, weight loss and complete oral hygiene is impossible In the immediate post-operative period, the patients must be observed for the post-operative sequelae of the surgical procedures as pain and obstruction of the oral airway. The effect of intermaxillaiy fixation on pulmonary function could be a ser1ous problem for patients with affected respiratory status resulted from trauma, or preexisting lung disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary discases. br br Intermaxillary fixation is considered to be the traditional method of treating fractures of the human jaw.
