Abstract

This study was conducted to demonstrate the immune-histochemically expression and distribution of both p63 protein and thrombomodulin glycoprotein in salivary gland neoplasms, as well as identify the correlation between their expression and tumor angiogenesis.
In this study’s cases, peroxidase-antiperoxidase method was used for immunohistochemical examination, each case was stained with p63 protein and thrombomodulin monoclonal antibodies.
Histopathologic examination using hematoxylin and eosin stain revealed that there is seven groups of salivary gland neoplasms; including pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin’s tumor, myoepithelioma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenocarcinoma (NOS) and clear cell carcinoma (NOS).
P63 protein expression in benign salivary gland neoplasms was more prominent than its expression than in malignant salivary neoplasms, as well as p63 antibody considered to be as marker for myoepthelial cells.
Thrombomodulin glycoprotein expression was also more prominent in benign salivary gland neoplasms than its expression than in malignant salivary neoplasms due to its role as cell adhesion molecule, as well as there TM has affinity for vascular tumors.
For result interpretation, assessment of both p63 and TM was carried using the image analysis software.
Consequently there is correlation of p63 immunolabelling to cell differentiation, as well as neither p63 nor TM is angiogenic factor.
