Abstract The highly reactive oxygen free radicals as the superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide , and hydroxyl radicals are known to be formed in all tissues subjected to ischemia and reperfusion where they contribute to cell injury under such conditions. They attack membrane phospholipids forming toxic peroxides, change the membrane permeability , or alter the responses of the different receptors to their corresponding messengers. They may also attack nuclear DNA , thus affect cell division and \or genetic expression of different cell proteins. |
