Abstract
Summary:-The present study was carried out to elucidate the toxic effect of Sodium selenite on body weight, biochemical parameter, nucleic acid, histopathological picture besides selenium residues in chicken tissues.One hundred and twenty, one day old, broiler chicks Hubbard breed were divided into three equal main groups. Group 1 was kept as control. Group 2 was given 10 ppm Sodium Selenite in ration for 30 days and 45 days. Group 3 was given 15 ppm Sodium Selenite in ration for 30 and 45 days.The chicks of groups treated with 0, 10 and 15 ppm of Sodium Selenite in ration were sacrificed at two periods. The first was at 30 days of age and the second was at 45 days of age. Blood samples were collected to obtain serum for estimation of biochemical parameters Alanine amino-transferase (ALT), Aspartate amino-transferase (AST) and Glutathione reductase (GR). also tissue samples were collected from liver, heart, kidney and pancreas for histopathological examination, in addition to samples from liver, breast and thigh muscles for detection of residue of sodium selenite. Determination of hepatic nucleic acid also estimated.
