Abstract

Vocal performance has increasingly gained interest in the society, which is evolving into a service-oriented
community. This growing interest has consequently induced a lot of multidisciplinary research concerning
voice assessment and therapy with a comprehensive battery of tests focusing on qualitative and quantitative aspects of vocal performance.
Auditory Perceptual assessment (APA) is one of the oldest methods of evaluation of voice disorders. APA is an
indirect and subjective tool of voice assessment, which depends on the output (i.e. voice) and not the source (i.e.
vocal fold vibration).
The vibration of the vocal folds critically determines the quality of voice and therefore its objective evaluation and quantification are tasks of high importance.
Examination of vocal fold vibratory function may reveal evidence to explain the abnormal acoustic manifestations.
There is sometimes, however, a large discrepancy between the subjective complaints and objective findings in dysphonic patients. Many patients have perceptually dysphonic voices but lack visible pathology by telescopic
or nasofibroscopic examination, and vice versa. Therefore direct observation of the complex vibratory patterns of the vocal folds during phonation offers the clinician one of the best indications of laryngeal function.
