Thesis Abstract
National Resistance against the Roman Presence in Egypt
(30 B.C. – A.D. 284) ”An Analytical Study”
Egypt’s Distinctive Strategic location and wealth since ancient times was a reason for its misery this attracted the covetousness of several nations to occupy it. The Egyptian People was destined ever since the old times to strife in defense of itself aiming at the liberation of their Country.
The Egyptians fought against a multitude of foreign nations like: Hyksos, Assyrians, Persians, Ptolemaic and Romans.
This study wanted to explain the role of this people in the national strife and presenting a book account for this nation and the extent of its contribution to the national resistance in such ancient times.
The study confirms that the Egyptians national resistance against the Roman occupation was not confined to revolutions only.
There were various other forms of resistance which the researcher referred to as passive resistance, with it did not use direct and armed confrontation against the occupiers. The most prominent manifestations in the Roman era:
a- Refrain form paying taxes.
b- Anachoresis.
c- Asylia.
d- Strike.
e- Stirring up and supporting any throve-claimant.
f- Theft and Piracy.
g- Prophecy.
h- Satire and mocking Roman Emperors.
i- Getting into conflict with Roman soldiers.
j- Taking the revenge from the Jews (Romans Puppets).
The study also tackled the role of the Roman administration and its procedures to limit or eradicate all forms of Egyptian resistance against Roman existence, whether positive or passive forms of resistance. And if it is successful or not the study aimed also at affirming that national resistance was not against Roman occupation and military soldiers such as the Jews and civil Roman citizens. The study tried to explain some controversial issues such as:
1- Most revolutions of Egyptian people whether during the Ptolemaic or Roman period arised from Upper Egypt, especially Thebes.
2- The low number of the Egyptians revolutions in the Roman period and the reasons of their failure their goals.
3- The diversity in forms of passive resistance in Comparison with the positive forms in the Roman period.
4- The relationship between most Roman emperors visits Egypt and the passive resistance by Alexandrians, represented in satirizing and mocking these emperors.
5- The Egyptians refusal to co-operate with Al-Nuba and in their revolutions.
This study tried to enlighten the Egyptian revolutions against the Romans by using maps and illustrating figures to shed more light on the prevalence and danger of every revolution in the Roman age, as well as the sites and places which has been mentioned in these revolutions.
Finally, in his study, the researcher wanted to highlight the truth about the Egyptian people’s stand against the hateful Roman occupier, and to reveal an aspect of glorious national struggle of this ancient people in the Roman. Age (30 B.C. – 284 A.D.).
