Abstract

The present study concerned with alcohol and its effects on cells involved in calcium homeostasis. C-cells of the thyroid gland and chief cells of the parathyroid gland were been studied for the effect of alcohol on them as the former one is the source of calcitonin (calcium-lowering hormone) and the latter is the source of parathormone hormone (calcium- raising hormone). It was concluded that alcohol causes initial stimulation of both C-cells of the thyroid gland and chief cells of the parathyroid gland, followed by hypoactivity of both cells due to degeneration of most of organelles of both types of cells. These effects are incompletely reversible after abstinence of alcohol.
