Abstract
This study was done at Medical Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Sham University during the period from 2006 – 2008 and included 85 patients.
The aim of this study was to detect survivin in breast cancer and to correlate the data with the different clinical and pathological factors to try to find out a role of survivin in re- evaluation of the tumor and the prognosis of breast cancer.
The studied individuals were classified into two main groups:
•Group A: 48 cases with malignant breast lesions.
•Group B: 37 cases with benign breast lesions as a control group.
All patients were females; the age of patients in the malignant group ranged between 26 to 83 years old, but in the benign group the range was between 15 to 54 years old. In the malignant group the postmenopausal patients (27)were more than the pre-menopausal patients(21).
All patients in our study were subjected to complete detailed history taking, general and local examination, routine laboratory investigations, radiodiagnostic investigations as mammography,and all patients were subjected to surgery for excision of the tumor mass, then tumor samples have been sent for pathological staging and grading according to(TNM) classification,and detection of estrogen and progesterone receptors expression in the malignant samples.
RNA extraction of all samples was done for qualitative RT - PCR for both tissue survivin and β-actin as house keeping genes.
