Abstract

This follow up study was conducted at the pediatrics’ hospital of Ain shams university. The data included 30 patients suffering from PEM according to Wellcome’s classification of 1970.
The patients were divided into 2 groups. The 1st group received nutritional rehabilitation supplemented with honey for 2 weeks, while the 2nd group received conventional nutritional rehabilitation throughout the same period. The 2 groups were compared to a control group including 20 patients, whose ages ranged between 6 months to 2 years.
The patients’ data included socioeconomic status, total duration of breast feeding, and duration of exclusive breast feeding and their examination included anthropometric measurements, and systemic examination.
Laboratory investigations included CBC, ALT,AST, total proteins, albumin, Alk.Ph, Cretinine, BUN, Na, K, P, and Ca. As well as CH50 which was measured by CH50
ELISA Kit which was purchased from DRG-USA.
After 2 weeks of nutritional rehabilitation, the patients were reevaluated using the same clinical and laboratory measures.
Comparison between the 2 PEM groups, and the control group before nutritional rehabilitation showed significant lower anthropometric measurements, Hb, Hct, Lymphocyte percentages, RBC’s count , RBC’s indices, ALT, AST, albumin, total proteins, P, and Ca between the 2 PEM groups and the control group, while
PNL percentages were significantly higher in both PEM groups in comparison to controls. Platelets count , WBC’s count , Alk.Ph, Creatinine, BUN , Na and K showed no statistically significant difference between the 2 PEM groups and the control group with no significant difference between the 2 PEM groups.
