Abstract Spinal pharmacology for pain control gained a great interest in recent years. Many drugs were tried, one of these is neostigmine (a cholinesterase inhibitor). In this study 3 groups of dogs each of 15 were choosen. In group A Bupivacine (a commonly used local anaesthetic) was given alone. In group B neostigmine in a dose of 100 ug was added. In group C neostigmine in a dose of 200 ug was added. The results showed that adding neostigmine to bupivacaine increase the duration of both sensory and motor block and protects against the usual reduction of blood pressure and heart rate which accompany spinal anesthesia (which may be considered as a beneficial effect). Some side effects occurred in few cases in the form of vomiting and urine retention, but these side effects were not severe and self limited. |
