Abstract

This research work aims to elucidate the effectiveness of the mechanical activation of local by-product slag that cooled by either water WCS or air ACS on the fresh, mechanical , mass transport and microstructure characteristics of OPC matrix. The degration processes of OPC/WCS mortars exposed to different aggressive ions of sulphates or/and chlorides were also investigated.
Eleven OPC mortar mixes made with various slag contents with various finenesses were prepared to study the impacts of mechanical activation extent and content of slag the fresh properties(flowability, rate of flowability loss and rheology) using mortar flow table apparatus, the mechanical properties mass transport properties.
Eleven OPC paste mixes made with different slag contents with various finenesses were prepared to study the impacts of mechanical activation extent fineness and content of slag on the microstructure characteristics of OPC matrix, by means of thermo-gravimetric analysis and de-sorption approaches.
Also, OPC mortar samples made with different contents of WCS with various finenesses were prepared, and then exposed to different severe environments of sulphates, chlorides and combined solution of sulphates and chlorides. The examined properties included rate of strength loss, expansion, weight gain and the total chloride profile and penetration depth. 50x50x50 mm cubes were prepared for measuring the compressive strength change regularly every two weeks along a period of one year.75x150mm cylinders were prepared for measuring the total chloride profile and penetration depth.
The main findings of this investigation were as follows:
1-The incorporation on activated local by product slag in OPC mortat mixes has led to notable changes in their fresh properties, increasing of flow ability, decrease of rate of flowability loss and improvement of rheological parameters.
2-Remarkable enhancements in microstructure, mechanical and mass transport properties of OPC matrix were produced as a result of utilizing slag content of 20% by mass of OPC.
3-The use of WCS in OPC concrete has led to significant improvement in its durability related properties, resistance to sulphate and chloride attack.
4- The coolong of slag using water is more appropriate approach than cooling of slag in air, where all considered characteristics of OPC/WCS mortars are slightly better than the corresponding of that of OPC/ACS. However, ACS could be utilized in OPC mixes after considering a careful and an effective activation program.
