Abstract We examined 27 children with clinical suspicion of acute osteomyelitis. initial conventional radiographs were done and revealed normal or equivocal results high resolution and power Doppler sonography were done at time of presentation sonographic findings were compared with final surgical findings ,aspiration cytology results or clinical and radiological follow up results.results: sonographic findings were analyzed in three time related groups based on the interval between the onset of symptoms and initial sonographic examination.deep soft-tissu swelling was the earliest sign of acute osteomyelitis:it was seen in 87.5% of patients;in the next stage there was periosteal elevation and sub-periosteal abscess(62.5%).the later stages were characterized by cortical ersion(61.5%),which was commonly present in those who had had symptoms for more than a week.together with positive clinical signs of inflammation.they were usually sufficient to establish the correct diagnosis. |
