Abstract

Introduction: Lumbosacral radiculopathy is one of the most common ailment affecting mankind and a major cause of work related disability. Lumbar intervertebral disc is a major cause of severe chronic and recurrent low back pain and leg pain.
Aim of the work and objectives: This study was carried out as a randomized clinical trial study to evaluate the effect of pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMF) in the management of patients with lumbar radiculopathy.
Methodology: Forty patients suffering from lumbar radiculopathy due to lumbar disc prolapse ,were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups; a study group that included 20 patients with lumbar radiculopathy who received the standard medical treatment and PEMF therapy ,and a control group that included 20 patients with lumbar radiculopathy who received the standard medical treatment and placebo treatment (the machine was turned off). Patients in the study group were subjected to PEMF for 20 minutes daily for 3 weeks successfully, the field strengths was from 5 to 15 Gauss, the frequency range from 7 Hz to 4 kHz. Both groups will be evaluated after 3 weeks using a visual analogue scale (VAS), Dermatomal Somatosensory evoked potentials (DSEP) for selected dermatomes and Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire.
Results: showed significant difference between both studied groups regarding pain severity after PEMF (p=0.000), and also significant differences between both studied groups regarding all domains of Oswestry score after PEMF (p<0.01) , And also a significant differences between both studied groups regarding latency and amplitude of right and left DSEP after PEMF (p<0.05).
Conclusion: we concluded that PEMF therapy is an effective method for the conservative treatment of lumbar radiculopathy caused by lumbar disc prolapse
