Abstract

Since the beginning of the modern organized society the demand for high security authentication of human identy has increased. Traditional techniques PINcodes, passwords, photo ID`S, magnetic-striped credit/debit cards and signatures are only sufficient for low security applications as they are inherently vulnerable to theft, loss and being forgetten. High security authentication must depend on the use of biometric technologies.
IRIS recognition is considered to be the most accurate biometric technology when compared to other technologies commercially in use today. This is because the false match and false non-match errors are very small, which implies a very high accuracy. To date iris recongition has found considerable success in aviation security for passenger screening and immigration control , banks, financial instituations.
The iris recongition system consists of an outomatic segmentation that localizes the circular iris and pupil region, occluding eyelids and eyelashes, and reflections. The extracted iris region then normalized into a rectangular block with constant dimensions to account for imaging inconsistencies. Finaaly, the phase data from 2D complex Gabor filters extracted and quantized to four levels to encode the unique pattern of the iris into a bit-wise biometric template.
The proposed system is composed of four stages, the first stage is image acquistion, the second stsge is iris analysis which involves iris localization and iris normalization, the thrid stsge is feature extraction and encoding and the last stage is amtching which involves identification and verification.
