Abstract

Genetic counseling is communicative process which deals with human problems associated with the occurrence and/or recurrence of a genetic disorder in a family.
This process involves an attempt by one or more appropriately trained persons to help the individual or family to a)Comprehend the medical facts, including diagnosis, probable course of disorder and available management b)Appreciate the way heredity contributes to the disorder and the risk of recurrence in relatives.
c)Understand the alternatives for dealing with the risk of recurrence d)Choose the course of action, which seems to them appropriate in view of this risk, the family goals, their ethical and religious standards and to act in accordance with that decision The objectives of our study were 1) Evaluation and support for child with down s syndrome 2) Counseling for the family member to provide support and guidance 3) Assessment follows up through application of medical check list Our current study was conducted on 36 patient with down`s syndrome (old and new diagnosed cases ; 19 male and 17 female) attending the pediatric genetic clinic at Menoufiya university.
