Abstract

Although software industry is considered relatively a recent industry, it went very fast toward maturity. This is mainly because of the swift development in the hardware and emerging of new tools and techniques of developing the software such as (structured programming, object oriented, and relational database) which helps to provide abundant of functionality, and customer demand high quality. Demand for quality is further intensified by the ever - increasing dependence of our society on software. Billing errors, large¬scale disruptions of telephone services can all be traced to the issue of software quality. In this era, quality has been brought to the center of the software development process. from the standpoint of software vendors, quality has become a necessary condition to compete in the marketplace. So many events went wrong because of software misfunction such as
• In 1981, a small timing difference caused by a computer program change created a 1/67 (or I in 67) chance that the space shuttle’s five on-board computers would not synchronize. The error caused a launch abort.
• In 1986, two hospital patients died after receiving fatal doses of radiation from a Therac 25 machine. A software problem caused the machine to ignore calibration data.
• In one of the biggest software errors in banking history, Chemical Bank mistakenly deducted about $15 million from more than 100,000 customer accounts one evening. The problem resulted from a single line of-code
in an updated computer program that caused the bank to process every withdrawal and transfer at its automated teller machines (ATMs) twice. For example, a person who withdrew $100 from an ATM had $200 deducted from his or her account though the receipt only indicate a withdrawal of $1 00. The mistake affected 150000 transactions from Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. • Hundreds of newspapers and Web sites ran stories about the ”Melissa” virus in 1999.The rapidly spreading computer virus forced several large corporations
to down their e-mail servers as the virus rode the Internet on a global rampage, ¬according to several leading network security companies.
Over the last decade, the extensive use of software has placed new demands and expectations on the software industry, and there is an ever growing need for techniques that can enhance the software development techniques and improve the quality of a delivered software product.
