Abstract Tinea pedis is the term used for a dermatophyte infection of the soles of the feet and the interdigital spaces. In this study we tried to through light on some clinical and laboratory aspects of this condition. An orientation about the condition was given in the introduction, also a comprehensive review of the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis as well as the epidemiology of the disease. In our study, we aimed mainly at studying the clinical features and causative fungi in diabetic and non diabetic patients among adult males and females attending the out patient clinic of dermatology and diabetes follow up of the Alexandria main university hospital. This study was performed on 100 patients and divided into: Group1 (G1):50 patients had noDM and Group2 (G2):50 patients had DM) randomly collected and complaining of Tinea pedis; 56 males and 44 females.51 cases presented with toe web maceration , 44 cases presented with vesiculobullous lesion and 5 cases with dry scaly of the foot in a whole sample. Full history was recorded from these patients including; age, sex occupation, residency diabetic history, diabetic profile. Samples were collected from the patients by skin scraping of the lesion. Mycological study was done on the samples. All skin samples subjected to KOH mounting for the detection of hyphae of dermatophytes. Then the samples were cultured on SDA with .Chloramphenicol and with or without Cycloheximide tubes. All isolated strains of Candida were identified by the germ tube test and cultured on corn- meal agar for the demonstration of chlamydospore production. The results of this study were tabulated and analyzed as follows: • The age group 40-49 years was the commonest in both studied groups. • The male sex was the commonest in both studied groups. • The employed patients were more than non- employed in both studied groups. • In Diabetic patients: the diabetic profiles of 35 patients out of 50 were uncontrolled and 15 were controlled. |
