Abstract Aim of the work This work is done to study the incidence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with liver cirrhosis who are admitted to EL-Minia university hospital, tropical medicine department. Conclusion As regard renal function tests, we observed rise in blood urea (37.5%) and serum creatinine (31%) levels in patients with SBP (group I) than in patients with sterile ascites (group II) (32.2% and 21% respectively) but the difference between tham was not significant statistically. Lactate dehydrogenase level in the serum and ascetic fluid was significantly higher among patients with SBP. Ultrasonographic examination revealed the presence of internal echoes within the ascitic fluid of patients with SBP with a statistically significant difference. Diagnostic pancreatitis with ascitic fluid analysis aids in the early diagnosis of SBP depending on the PMN count, which is the gold standard of this infection. Ascitic fluid total protein ≤ 1gm/dl was found significantly more frequent in patients with SBP than in patients with sterile ascites. |
