Abstract

Chronic rhinosinusitis is a disease that affects a significant percentage of population resulting in a large financial burden on society.
There exist no real controversy about the bacteriology of acute rhinosinusitis, Strept. Pneumonae , H. influanzae and M. catarrhalis are by far the most common pathogens in this acute infection. However , in chronic rhinosinusitis the bacteriological culture show a great variation.
Recent studies revealed that, chronic rhinosinusitis is a polymicrobial infection which includes planktonic (free) and biofilm infections with bacterial and fungal elements.
Our objective in this work was to study both the planktonic and the biofilm forming bacteria to understand the pathogenesis of this disease which is still poorly defined.
The present study was carried out in the period between May 2008 to May 2009 on 20 patients (15 males and 5 females ) ranged in age from 9 to 45 years who were diagnosed to have CRS by history, clinical and radiological examination.
The study of the planktonic bacteria was carried out by taking sinus swabs intraoperatively during endoscopic sinus sugery followed by aerobic cultivation on approprtiate media. The isolated bacteria was identified by conventional methods and antibiotic sensitivity testing was carried out.
